Inlays and Onlays fill in gaps in teeth when a filling will not work because the tooth is too damaged to support it, and a crown would be too invasive. An inlay fills in cavities and hollows between the cusps, mainly covering the chewing surface of your tooth. An onlay is a more substantial reconstruction, doing more than just filling in cavities on the chewing surface; it also extends out and covers one or more cusps of the tooth. Both are similar to crowns in that they are made from the same material and serve the same function. The difference is that, unlike a crown, they do not cover the entire surface of the tooth. Both inlays and onlays are made of porcelain, gold, or composite resin. In recent years porcelain has been increasingly popular as the material of choice because of its strength and colour, which can potentially match the colour of your natural teeth.
